Two of the greatest appeals of switching to an alternative-fuel vehicle — electric, compressed natural gas or hydrogen — are saving money and reducing your daily carbon footprint. But another is being able to supply your own fuel overnight from home where you may even be able to generate some of it yourself. However, the technological challenges of producing an affordable home refueling station for CNG vehicles, especially in light of the variations in the quality of the gas being supplied, has made this more difficult than originally thought. Early versions like the unit shown here sold for over $4,000 and have been discontinued as we await a technological breakthrough.
